Al Attiyah Takes Part in Delhi Sustainable Development Summit

New Delhi, February 05 (QNA) - The Chairman of Administrative Control and Transparency Authority, HE Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah, on Thursday said the State of Qatar, under the wise leadership of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani implemented in 2011 an ambitious long-term sustainable development strategy. In his speech before the15th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit, HE Al Attiyah said the Qatari leadership is committed to working seriously with other governments to build an international consensus on the goals of sustainable development and climate change policies. He warned that the global economy is going through an unprecedented growth pointing out that despite the fact that the economic growth lifted millions out of poverty but the current model associated with the rapid population growth in some areas of the world, has led to an increased pressure on the limited natural resources. He quoted in this regard the Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi as saying:" The world has enough for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed." The existing earth's resources are sufficient to meet the needs of the moment without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own need, HE Al Attiyah said while urging need for a more sustainable approach on the use and conservation of natural resources and calling for further cooperation to implement fundamental changes in the production and consumption processes. In the event that our communities have continued on the path of greed, the growing pressure on our limited resources will lead to a widening gap between the rich and the poor and cause damage to the environment, HE Al Attiyah went on saying.       He pointed out that participants will share a common interest in the impact of unsustainable use of resources on climate and a common responsibility for the welfare of future generations to address these concerns at the national level. He urged the participants to pledge to move forward and build up their work on the principles and policies of the previous agreements, such as the Johannesburg Declaration on Sustainable Development and the 10-year framework of programmes on sustainable consumption and production patterns adopted at the Rio+20 Summit. He added that the time has come to pass from the global consensus on climate change and sustainable development issues towards more practical solutions. As a former President of the Climate Change Conference COP18/CMP8 I am aware of the challenges that lie ahead of us, and we are working to reach a consensus on a common vision for tackling climate change, HE Al Attiyah added. Such a consensus requires of the participants to work hard in order to reduce the gap between the general and shared visions about the issues of sustainable development and climate change, he continued. HE Al Attiyah expressed optimism that the summit is progressing towards achieving a set of proposals to be presented to the COP 21 in Paris. The conference was attended by Qatar's Ambassador to the Republic of India, HE Ahmad Ibrahim Al Abdullah, and members of the delegation accompanying HE Al Attiyah. (QNA).
