American nabbed on fraud charges

BANGKOK, June 8 (TNA) - Thailand's tourist police have arrested an American man who is wanted by police in his home country on fraud and money laundering charges. The Thai tourist police told reporters on Saturday that the accused, 47-year-old Paul David Cardwell, was apprehended at a fitness complex in Hua Hin resort of Prachuap Khiri Khan province in the Lower Thai South, after he entered Thailand and married a Thai woman about seven years ago. According to the Thai tourist police, the American fugitive confessed during an interrogation that he was formerly chairman of a hygienic firm in the United States and had swindled money from his firm and a hospital totaling about 49.5 million baht. The accused also told the tourist police that he had jumped bail and escaped to Thailand and travelled in and outside the Kingdom by using fake passport over the past seven years. The Thai police have initially charged him with illegal entry and staying in Thailand, before deporting him to face charges in the United States later. (TNA)
