Anti-graft panel bids to improve Thailand’s corruption ranking

BANGKOK, May 23 (TNA) - The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) targets to help improve Thailand’s position in the global corruption ranking by achieving 50 points in the corruption perceptions index (CPI) within 2017, according to NACC member Pakdee Pothisiri. The NACC has embarked on the second phase of its 2015 national anti-corruption strategy, aiming at creating sustainable changes in people perception toward corruption where they reject corrupt people, Pakdee said when presiding over a National Anti-Corruption Sub-Committee seminar on Saturday. Thailand was ranked 85th out of 175 countries worldwide in the CPI ranking in 2014, moving up 12 places from the previous year. The score of 0 is highly corrupt, while 100 very clean. More than two-thirds of the 175 surveyed nations scored below 50. Meanwhile, Vicha Mahakhun, another NACC member, said religion and education play a vital role in the anti-corruption effort during the second phase. Anti-corruption efforts should start at the community and village levels, Vicha said, suggesting each province to create a corruption-free community as a model for other communities to follow. (TNA)
