Arab Network for Human Rights Organizes Panel Discussion Marking the 75th Anniversary of the UN Founding

Doha, October 24 (QNA) - The Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions organized a virtual panel discussion entitled "75 Years: Development of the Human Rights System: Implications and Prospects", in partnership with the High Commissioner for Human Rights represented by the UN Center for Training and Documentation in the Field of Human Rights for South and West Asia and the Arab Region, and in the presence of 75 participants from 20 Arab countries, representing national human rights institutions, members of the network, and a number of civil society organizations and human rights activists. In his intervention Sultan Hassan Al Jamali, Executive Director of the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions - based in Doha - he stressed the necessity of invoking international law and finding new tools, methods and mechanisms that enable the United Nations to implement its decisions, in a way that undermines the use of force and imposes the status quo, and giving priority to public interest and effective and constructive international cooperation, to achieve international peace and security. In the same context, he stressed the need to end the suffering of the Palestinian people, resolve the Palestinian issue in accordance with international legitimacy decisions, end the Israeli occupation, establish the State of Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital, and establish a just and comprehensive peace in accordance with the principle of land for peace. He stressed the importance of implementing the goals of the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan, noting that if this plan is implemented, it will form the basis for solutions, explaining that the implementation of the sustainable development goals needs serious, honest and effective international solidarity between countries and all stakeholders. Al Jamali considered that strengthening the rule of law and promoting human rights is essential, stressing the importance of enhancing the participation of developing countries in global governance institutions, and implementing the principle of leaving no one behind. Al Jamali congratulated the UN for its 75th anniversary, pointing out that during these past years the United Nations managed to avoid the outbreak of a third World War, in addition to its appreciated and commendable efforts to promote and protect human rights. For his part, Deputy Director of the UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South- West Asia and the Arab Region Alaa Kaoud, presented a working paper in which he dealt with the main milestones that the international human rights system has gone through since the founding of the United Nations, and the extent of interaction with the work of these mechanisms in terms of promoting and protecting human rights, including work to develop Standards and guarantees. The panel discussion witnessed interventions by the participants focused on the role of the United Nations in combating racism and decolonization, the importance of mechanisms and the role of national institutions to encourage their countries to ratify them, the importance of working on the 2030 sustainable development plan by eliminating corruption as an initial step and the importance of introducing and training on human rights at an early age in addition to the Arab human rights system and the establishment of the permanent Arab Human Rights Committee and its role. The participants praised the cooperation with the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions to promote human rights in the Arab region and other interventions related to the issues of the international human rights system.
