Armed Forces Chief To Meet Thai Counterpart Thursday On Construction Of New Border Wall

KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Armed Forces chief General Zulkifeli Mohd Zin will meet his Thai counterpart on Thursday to discuss the alignment of a new border wall. He said the matter was now still being discussed at the Malaysia-Thailand Executive Committee Meeting. "I will meet with Thailand's Chief of Armed Forces, General Worapong Sanganeta in Bangkok," he told reporters when met during the Armed Forces Aidilfitri celebration here, Tuesday. Currently, Zulkifeli said, there are two separate walls, both constructed in each country and thus a new single wall, jointly constructed with its construction and maintenance cost to be shared, needed to be put in place. The announcement on the new wall was made by Zulkifeli on Sept 14 last year, in which he stated that the cooperation among others was to coordinate border patrolling between the two countries. "We are also studying on the construction of a more advanced wall equipped with current technology to enhance border security control," he said. Earlier, Zulkifeli had also handed over Aidifitri aid to 41 army retirees and five soldiers, some of whom were injured during service and combatting the comunists. Malaysian King Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah and Queen Tuanku Hajah Haminah also graced the event which was held at the Wisma Perwira ATM, here. The Royal couple spent about 90 minutes at the event including watching a performance by the Army's Culture Troupe. Also present were Malaysian Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein and his deputy Mohd Johari Bahrom, besides more than 3,000 guests. -- BERNAMA
