Army chief:There is no link between Pakistani and Thai insurgencies

BANGKOK, December 17 (TNA) - Thai Army Chief General Udomdej Sitabutr says that Tuesday's deadly attack at an army-run school in Pakistan's northwestern Peshawar Province, which killed over 140 people and injured over 130 others, has no link with insurgency in the Thai far South. General Udomdej, who is also Thai Deputy Defence Minister, made the confirmation on Wednesday morning, prior to his departure for neighbouring Myanmar for a two-day official visit. In response to reported fears of any similar fatal attack in the violence-plagued Thai far South and other sensitive areas in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), General Udomdej insisted that the Royal Thai Army has been always vigilant against violent incidents in the insurgency-hit Thai deep South and has closely monitored updates as an attempt to prevent violent unrest in the southernmost Thai region. The Thai army chief stressed that Tuesday's violence in Pakistan is a domestic problem and has no link with militants' operations in the southern border Thai region, but local security authorities remain on alert following the violent attack in the South Asian nation. At least 141 people, including 132 students, were killed and at least 133 others were injured after a group of six armed Taliban militants stormed into an army-run school in Peshawar on December 16 and they then exchanged fire with the Pakistani government's security forces.
