Art exhibit reflects cultural connections between Iran, Germany

TEHRAN,Jan.21(MNA) -- Tehran’s Shokuh Gallery is currently playing host to an exhibition of paintings by a German surrealist artist, who believes that his works explore the cultural connections between Iran and Germany. “I take inspiration from Iranian art and blend it with European modern styles to express myself,” Hans Werner Albeck said in a press release published by the gallery on Sunday. Albeck, 74, came to Iran 40 years ago to preside over a Tehran branch of Grundig AG, a former German manufacturer of consumer electronics for home entertainment. He married an Iranian woman and stayed in Iran even after Grundig shut down its office in Tehran in 1980. He now can speak Persian with a slight but sweet German accent. “My focus on the apple in the paintings refers to the two nations’ common perception of the element, which is the symbol of love and affection in both countries, or the pomegranate, which is considered as a heavenly fruit in Islam and Christianity. Thus, these elements have their common meanings in my works,” Albeck stated. He said that he is also inspired by works of Persian poets such Sadi and Hafez and the rich Iranian traditional architecture. “I take photos of the cultural heritage sites when I travel around Iran and then try to reflect some aesthetic aspects of these places on canvas,” he added. He has showcased in his works in many exhibits in Iran and Germany. “The vast array of my palette refers to my inspiration from Persian miniatures and the plenty of sunny days in Iran, which are very impressive to my German compatriots,” he said. Albeck’s works will be on display until January 24 at the gallery located at 19 Amir Nuri Alley, North Salimi St., Andarzgu Blvd.
