Asean Armed Forces Chiefs Concur IS A Threat To Region

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- Asean armed forces chiefs concurred that the Islamic Nation (IS) militant group will threaten the region if it was not checked early. Malaysian Armed Forces chief, General Zulkifeli Mohd Zain said a regional network to share intelligence would be set up to prevent the spread of the IS. "Other than sharing military intelligence information, we will also take up the matter much higher by conducting military analysis to check the entry of IS," he told reporters at the end of a two-day Asean Chiefs Of Defence Forces Informal Meeting (ACDIM 2015), here, Tuesday. He said the potential of a more serious threat was feared if the nations in the region did not nip the problem in the bud. Asked on the threats of terrorists in the country, Zulkifeli said Malaysia was not exempted as some Malaysians were influenced by terrorist groups such as IS and Jemaah Islamiah. He said the public must play a role by becoming the eyes and ears of the government and promptly report to the authorities if they saw individuals or groups carrying out any action which could raise suspicion. -- BERNAMA
