ASEAN as one community

BANGKOK, November 11 (TNA) - People in member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) need to understand each other's cultures and traditions in order to fully realise and sustain the ASEAN Community (AC), set to be formed by the end of 2015. Malaysian Ambassador to Thailand H.E. Dato' Nazirah Hussain made the suggestion when delivering her speech at a media networking session, held at the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok on Tuesday. During the question and answering (Q&A) session, the Malaysian ambassador stressed AC is not just being prepared in the economic aspect, but all ASEAN member states need to make sure that their people understand and learn on neighbouring countries' cultures, traditions and ways of life, as AC means a single or one community and ASEAN population are to become strong as a whole. The Malaysian top envoy foresaw that Malaysia would, next year, face a tough challenge as the ASEAN Chair, as the 10-member bloc is driving toward AC. According to the Malaysian ambassador, Kuala Lumpur is to focus on how to make ASEAN go together in all three pillars of politics and security, economy and socio-culture, especially cultures and security, in order to have more bargaining power on global stages. The Malaysian top envoy also handed the stage to heads of each sector including, economy, trade and tourism, to brief the media on Malaysia's current development. (TNA)
