ASEAN police command centre opened in Bangkok

BANGKOK, June 11 (TNA) - The Royal Thai Police has opened the ASEAN Police Command Centre in order to connect security information among police forces of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as the ASEAN Community (AC) is scheduled to be formed by the end of this year. Thai Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, who oversees national security, presided over a ceremony to inaugurate the newly-set up ASEAN Police Command Center at the Royal Thai Police headquarters in Bangkok on June 10, in which senior Thai police officers and ASEAN diplomats participated to, among others, sing the "ASEAN Way" song to show ASEAN solidarity and the ASEAN flags were flown. General Prawit, who is also Thai Defence Minister, said at the event that police forces are well-prepared to function in accordance with policies of the governments of ASEAN member countries, especially in ensuring security, preventing and suppressing of transnational crime and the ASEAN Police Command Centre has, thus, been set up to integrate and exchange relevant information for the regional police forces. Thailand's National Police Chief Police General Somyot Pumpanmuang noted, meanwhile, that the new centre is headed by Deputy National Police Chief Police General Wuthi Liptapallop and will carry out four main strategies, including those on border management, solutions to all forms of security threats, regional connectivity enhancement in tourism, services and investment among ASEAN member states, inter-and intra-regional crime prevention and crackdown and organisational management and development. Besides, the newly-set up centre will work together with ASEAN embassies and all other agencies concerned, including all 1.460 police stations across Thailand, to ensure timely exchange of intelligence and information.
