ASEAN SOM Meet Ahead Of AMM

KUALA LUMPUR, April 25 (Bernama) -- The ASEAN senior officials preparatory meeting commenced here Saturday to work-out details ahead of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting on Sunday. The closed-door meeting at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre was being chaired by the Foreign Ministry's secretary-general Osman Hashim. The secretaries-general of the Foreign Ministry from other ASEAN member countries present at the meeting were Datuk Erywan Pehin Yusof from Brunei, Rathcavy Soeung (Cambodia), Gusti Agung Pesaka from (Indonesia), Alounkeo Kittikhoun (Laos), Aung Lynn (Myanmar), Evan P. Garcia (The Philippines), Chee Wee Kiong (Singapore), Norachit Sinhaseni (Thailand) and Le Hoai Toung (Vietnam). Meanwhile, senior officials of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) have gathered here for a preparatory meeting for the 11th BIMP-EAGA Summit, held in conjunction with the 26th ASEAN Summit. Among those present were the deputy director-general of the Economic Planning Unit in the Prime Minister's Department Nik Azman Nik Abdul Majid, Brunei's Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministry assistant director Sia Ai Ching, Indonesia's Economic Affairs Ministry special advisor Dr Raldi Koestoer and the Philippines' Trade and Industry Department undersecretary Dr Prudencio Reyes Jr. Also present were Asian Development Bank director James Lynch, assistant director to the ASEAN Economic Community Department of the ASEAN Secretariat Wan Joon Lian and BIMP Facilitation Centre head Sussana Chew. Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak will chair the BIMP-EAGA Summit to be held at the Langkawi International Convention Centre on April 28. Ruler of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Indonesian president Joko Widodo and the Philippines president Benigno Aquino III are scheduled to attend the meeting. The BIMP-EAGA is a sub-regional economic co-operation initiative in Southeast Asia. Its vision is to realise socially acceptable and sustainable economic development and the full participation of the sub-regions in the ASEAN development process. --BERNAMA
