ASEAN urged to jointly deal with natural disasters

BANGKOK, September 10 (TNA) - The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) should work together to be prepared for tackling natural disasters in the region, which has caused huge losses of life and property. Thai Deputy Interior Minister Suthee Makboon told participants in a seminar, held in Bangkok on Thursday, that it is necessary for ASEAN members to jointly build protective measures and simultaneously tackle natural disasters efficiently. Praising his ministry’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation for its past performances, Suthee said what the government should do is to make the general public better understand losses caused by natural disasters to enable them to help themselves. The deputy interior minister stressed that other concerned government agencies must also work together to provide assistance to affected people. Besides, ASEAN member states must work in the same tune to prevent natural disasters effectively. Thursday's seminar was jointly organised by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre), aimed to handle natural disasters in ASEAN to reduce losses from 2018 to 2030.
