ASEAN urges Thailand to solve political problems with negotiations

BANGKOK, April 22 (TNA) - Other member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have called for democratic and negotiation-based solutions and a quick general election in Thailand. Thailand's Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul told journalists of the regional call on Wednesday, saying that other ASEAN member states also expressed their concerns over Thailand's political problems in their joint drafted statement sent to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently. Surapong said that other ASEAN member countries made the call so that Thailand would grow together with them, and that he received the drafted statement from the Myanmar foreign affairs minister as authorities of ASEAN member states have not yet signed it. According to the caretaker deputy prime minister, ASEAN leaders also issued a similar statement last December, both showing that ASEAN and the international community have monitored the situation in Thailand.
