Assistance mobilized for earthquake victims in Thai North

CHIANG RAI, THAILAND, May 7 (TNA) - Concerned agencies have mobilized assistance for victims of a powerful earthquake which struck the Thai North earlier this week. In the wake of Thailand’s strongest earthquake, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale with its epicenter in Phan District of the northern Chiang Rai Province on May 5, representatives of the Engineering Institute of Thailand are inspecting damage in Chiang Rai on Wednesday to work out safety measures. Highway workers have also used heavy machinery to urgently repair Highway 118, linking Chiang Rai with adjacent Chiang Mai Province, in Ban Huai San Yao of the Dong Mada locality in Mae Lao District and in Ban Pong Pu Fuang of the Mae Suai locality, both are in Chiang Rai where the highway section subsided and severely cracked. The workers have built a temporary detour for motorists passing the location, as the repair is expected to be completed by Thursday morning. Repair is also needed in Chiang Mai, as a main road in Ban Tho Pa Tan village bears a three-meter-long crack and underground water comes up, flooding more than 10 local houses. Local authorities believe aftershocks broke an underground main, while local people in Chiang Mai remain in fear as aftershocks continued last night. Chiang Mai's provincial disaster prevention and mitigation officials are, meanwhile, gathering donations to assist quake victims in Chiang Rai. (TNA)
