Associations Meet DPM On Raising Funds For Palestinians

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 (Bernama) -- The Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail Friday received the visit of several organisations to discuss the mechanism to raise funds for the National Welfare Fund (YKN) – Palestine People's Fund (TRP) for country especially for health and education assistance. Apart from the YKN-TRP committee, others present in the 30-minute meeting were Real Estate and Housing Developers Association Malaysia (Rehda), Master Builders Association Malaysia (MBAM), Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Malaysian Islamic Chamber of Commerce at the deputy prime minister's office at Parliament House here. YKN-TRP committee chairman Dr Rozhan Othman when met by reporters after the meeting said the funds collected would be channelled to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to manage the funds from various countries to operate clinics and schools built in that country. He said the move by US President Donald Trump early this year in ceasing the country’s contributions to UNRWA would force several schools and clinics managed by UNRWA to close by the end of this year due to insufficient funds. “As such, the Deputy Prime Minister had taken the decision for us to seek donations from the people and corporate organisations in the country for the fund. "Turkey has began a similar initiative in Ramadan,” he said. He was optimistic the fund would be able to collect up to RM5 million by year end. The fund’s pre-launch was officiated by Dr Wan Azizah on July 10. Members of the public can donate to the fund by contributing to its Alliance Islamic Bank account at 160140010011300 (YKN-Tabung Rakyat Palestin). -- BERNAMA
