Australia, Thailand launch Colombo Plan

BANGKOK, May 8 (TNA) - Australia and Thailand have jointly launched the Colombo Plan, under which Australian students will visit the Thai Kingdom for cultural exchange. Visiting Minister for Trade and Foreign Affairs of the Commonwealth of Australia Julie Bishop and Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister General Tanasak Patimapragorn jointly presided over a ceremony to launch the new Colombo Plan in Bangkok on Friday, aimed to enhance bilateral ties and cooperation between Canberra and Bangkok. The Colombo Plan was initiated by the Australian government to sponsor Australian students to visit and stay in Asian countries where they can learn on different cultures to enhance relations between Australia and the allied Asian nations through people-to-people contacts. Under the Colombo Plan for 2015, 161 selected Australian students will be sent to Thailand for the purposes. On the occasion of her official visit to Thailand as the guest of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Australian Minister also paid a courtesy call on Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha at Government House, during which both sides expressed their intention on deepening bilateral ties and cooperation between Australian and Thailand in various areas, especially in security, anti-human trafficking, eduction, trade and investment, as well as science and technology.
