Australian EC secretary-general visits Thailand Feb 11-13

BANGKOK, February 13 (TNA) - Secretary-General of the Australian Election Commission (EC) Tom Rogers, who is also an election commissioner, is paying a three-day visit to Thailand from February 11-13, stressing on close relations between the Election Commissions of the two allied nations. Accompanied by Australian Ambassador to Thailand Paul Robilliard, Rogers paid a courtesy call on Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister General Tanasak Patimapragorn in Bangkok on Thursday, during which he took note of the sound relations between the Australian and Thai ECs and their stakeholders. Rogers said the Australian EC is also ready to share its experiences with the Thai EC, while viewing that it should be a good opportunity for the Australian EC as well to learn from the Thai EC and Thailand's political reform. The visiting Australian EC secretary-general mentioned key factors to the success of an election and political reform, including the independence of agencies concerned and their well-trained staffs to work with dignity and effectiveness. General Tanasak, in turn, expressed his appreciation to Australia’s sincere support for Thailand’s political reform and joint activities with Thailand steadily, as well as readiness to share experiences and best practices on political development with the Thai Kingdom. During his stay in Bangkok, the Australian EC secretary-general is also scheduled to meet with representatives of several other Thai agencies, including the Election Commission of Thailand (EC), the National Legislative Assembly (NLA)'s Standing Committee on Political Affairs, the National Reform Council (NRC)'s Sub-committee on Political Affairs and the Constitutional Drafting Committee (CDC). Meanwhile, the Australian top envoy reiterated that Australia will continue to share experiences and to contribute to Thailand’s reform process. (TNA)
