Authorities discuss Thai exports

BANGKOK, September 23 (TNA) - Authorities concerned have discussed approaches on boosting Thai exports in the remaining of this year, after the country's overall shipments of goods to overseas markets grew only 4 per cent year-on-year in August 2013. Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Niwatthamrong Bunsongphaisan chaired the meeting with Thai commercial attaches from 62 countries and representatives of the private sector in Bangkok on Monday to discuss the measures, considered urgent, to boost Thai exports in the rest of this year. The authorities predicted, however, that Thai exports should increase in the fourth quarter of this year because it is normally a period of large orders and the government is trying to reach new markets and to promote Thai exports of all groups of products, including agricultural and industrial products, mainly targeting Asian markets, while increasing border trade parallelly. The authorities are also revising Thailand's export growth projection, as the earlier expected rate of 7-7.5 per cent is unlikely this year, with a new estimation expected by next month. As Thai exports grew by 4 per cent last month, causing the overall national exports to expand by only 1 per cent on average during the first eight months of 2013. (TNA)
