Authorities mull proposed fence along Thai-Malaysian border

BANGKOK, May 30 (TNA) - Defence Minister Air Chief Marshal Sukumpol SuwanatatHe says that concerned authorities are considering a proposal, recently raised by Thai Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha, on the construction of a fence along the Thai-Malaysian border. Air Chief Marshal Sukumpol told journalists on Thursday that the proposed fence along the Thai-Malaysian border could block militants from comfortably escaping and help suppress smuggling, drug trafficking and illegal migrant workers, but its construction would be costly and the authorities concerned are, therefore, considering the proposal. The defence minister confirmed that the next round of peace negotiations between the Thai government, through the National Security Council (NSC), and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional insurgency movement (BRN) will be held on June 13 as scheduled, despite continual violence in the Thai deep South. The Thai defence minister also denied as groundless the latest video clip of BRN leaders Hasan Taib and Adulkareem Kalib recently posted on YouTube, accusing Thai soldiers of hurting people in the troubled Thai far South. The Thai defence minister insisted that the government's soldiers have adhered to disciplines and laws. (TNA)
