Authorities urgently provide help to flood victims

BANGKOK, September 17 (TNA) -- Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said that 5 provinces in Thailand have been severely affected by the Vamco storm, adding that his department has urgently coordinated with concerned agencies to provide assistance to those affected as soon as possible. Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department Director -General Chatchai Promlert said the Vamco has now been downgraded into a low pressure system and it is currently passing through the lower northeastern region causing continuous downpours there, as well as in Central and Eastern region. Since the storm arrived in Thailand on September 13 until now, 5 provinces in the country have already faced the blunt of the its impact, as all have been hit with flash floods, including, Tak, Chantaburi, Surin, Si Sa Ket, and Chonburi, totaling 8 districts, 14 subdistricts and 15 villages. The director reported that the heavy rainfalls in Tak province has cause water to overflow the river banks, while flash floods have hit two districts of the province, namely Phop Phra and Ban Tak. The severe downpours in Chantaburi province has caused the water level in Chantaburi River to rise and overflow its banks, flooding houses in Khao Khitchakut district, while flash floods have also flooded Tha Mai and Khitchakut subdistricts. Surin province is also facing similar hardship as the province could not drain out excess water in time, prompting the heart of the province to be flooded. In the mean time, flash floods have inundated Phu Sing district of Si Sa Ket province. As for Chon Buri province, floods have inundated many main roads, including the 116-117 kilometre mark of the motorway and Sukhumvit road in Bang Lamung district, as well as Pattaya City, North and South Pattaya roads, Pattaya beach roadside, Si Racha district, while flash floods have also hit Bang Lamung district. The director pointed out that presently, the flooding situation in most provinces has returned to normal, except for Chon Buri province, where some villages are located in low lying areas and residents there are still living among inundations, waiting for the water to be completely drained out. Commute in Chon Buri has also returned to normalcy, said the director, adding that his department has mobilised authorities to inspect the damages in all areas in order to provide the quickest assistance to those needed. He further noted that coordination has been carried out with concerned agencies to start repairs and maintenance on utilities to alleviate the people's hardships as quickly as possible. (TNA)
