Azerbaijan elected to UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage

Baku, June 6, AZERTAC Azerbaijan has been elected as a member of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage for the 2018-2022 term. In a joint statement, Azerbaijan`s ministries of Foreign Affairs and Culture said the country was elected at the 7th General Assembly of the States Parties to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Paris. Azerbaijan gained 90 votes to be elected to the Committee, with other bidders including Belarus, Georgia, Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Macedonia. Poland was also elected with 52 votes. The core functions of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage are to promote the objectives of the Convention, provide guidance on best practices and make recommendations on measures for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage.
