Azerbaijani Foreign Minister meets IOM Director General

Baku, September 3, AZERTAC Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov has met a delegation led by William Lacy Swing, the Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), on September 3. William Lacy Swing said that Baku office of the organization was operating since 90s: "The relations between IOM and Azerbaijan are successfully developing." He said the center, established for carrying out Azerbaijan`s migration policy, launching legislative and institutional basis, could be a model for other countries. William Lacy Swing noted that it was impossible in the modern world to have a country with only one ethnic background as it was in 19th century. He added that the countries should take into account various ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds. He stressed in this regard Azerbaijan`s rich multiculturalism and tolerance traditions could be example to the world. Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said as a result of Armenia`s ethnic cleansing policy Azerbaijan has more than 1 mln IDPs. The Minister said the return of Azerbaijani IDPs to their homelands was a part of the negotiation process, adding they would definitely return to their ancestral lands. He stressed Azerbaijan paid attention to the development of relations with the IOM, and said the country was ready to share its experience in migration policy, rich multiculturalism and tolerance traditions. During the meeting, the parties exchanged views over a number of issues of mutual interest, including migration problems in Europe, death of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea.
