Bahrain marks Arab Deaf Week

Manama, May 26 (BNA): Bahrain has marked the 43rd edition of the Arab Week of the Deaf, being held this year under the theme “Employment of the Deaf”. The Bahrain Deaf Society celebrated the pan-Arab annual event, hosting a ceremony at the Bapco Club in Awali under the patronage of Labour and Social Development Minister Jameel bin Mohammed Ali-Humaidan. The ceremony was also attended by Assistant-Undersecretary for Social Care and Rehabilitation Shaikha Aisha bint Ali Al-Khalifa, representative of the civil society institutions. The event featured a documentary movie, highlighting the rights of the deaf, in addition to other recreational activities. Assistant-Undersecretary for Social Care and Rehabilitation Shaikha Aisha bint Ali Al-Khalifa commended the strenuous efforts of the Bahrain Deaf Society to serve this category of hearing-impaired people. She underlined the Government-led efforts to promote the conditions of the deaf and engage them in projects which suit their capabilities. The ministry has to-date succeeded in employing 162 male and 72 females in the private sector and included others in the productive families programme. A total 1796 deaf people receive each an allowance worth BD100 monthly.
