Bahrain's perpetual growth highlighted in key international forum

New York, July 18 (BNA): Cabinet Affairs Minister Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al Mutawa affirmed the perpetual development process in Bahrain to meet future needs and promote the kingdom’s achievements at all levels so as to attain the sustainable development goals (SDGs) 2030. Addressing the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF 2018) on sustainable development of the UN Economic and Social Council, the Cabinet Affairs Minister underlined Bahrain’s commitment to achieving the sustainable development goals 2030 by continuing its efforts to bring about comprehensive development that meets the needs of all people in Bahrain without exception. He pointed out that out of this commitment, Bahrain had submitted its first Voluntary National Review (VNR) on implementation of SDGs 2030 in which it highlighted its achievements in this respect through government programmes, in partnership with the private sector, the civil society and academic authorities. He said submitting the first NVR was an opportunity to cast light on the executive means of the development schemes which were adopted by Bahrain with the contribution of local and international partners. This, he added, coincided with holding ministerial workshops to envisage the government’s work plan 2019-2022. Al Mutawa pointed out working out the suitable institutional mechanisms by the Bahraini government to follow up progress in implementing the SDGs by setting up the National Informatics Committee and an index and statistics base for that. He stressed that the national development priorities mapped out by Bahrain clearly intersect with the SDGs 2030. He pointed out success of the Bahraini government to tune up the SDGs in its work plan 2015-2018. The Cabinet Affairs Minister spotlighted a number of challenges facing Bahrain as a developing country, including mainly limited resources, climate change, terrorism and foreign interference in its internal affairs. He noted that overcoming those challenges requires activating international partnership in line with the recommendations of the 3rd international conference to finance sustainable development which convened in Addis Ababa in July 2015 and which launched a renewable global partnership fostering sustainable development. Al Mutawa voiced Bahrain’s keenness to exert more efforts to rally funding resources and direct them towards more development gains. He underscored the importance of international cooperation in attaining the SDGs 2030, expressing the kingdom’s appreciation of the existing cooperation with the United Nations and its specialised agencies. He emphasised that the noble goals of the sustainable development plan 2030 require rallying ranks in the international community to reach them and ensure global stability and growth. The Cabinet Affairs Minister underscored the importance of the High-Level Political Forum on sustainable development in highlighting successful experiences in sustainable development and exchange best practises in this regard. He also expressed Bahrain’s keenness to continue taking part in the forum given its importance in rallying international efforts to achieve the SDGs.
