Ban on political movements in Thailand maintained

BANGKOK, November 14 (TNA) - Thai Army Chief General Udomdej Sitabutr says that a ban on political movements remains intact nationwide and political parties have not yet submitted a request on lifting the ban to the army-led National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO). Speaking to journalists before leaving for an inspection tour of the 2nd Army Area Command headquarters at Suranaree Army Camp in Nakhon Ratchasima Province in the Thai Northeast on Saturday, General Udomdej revealed that new Constitution draft writers and the National Reform Council (NRC) have been tasked with listening to opinions, therefore, there should not be a problem. General Udomdej affirmed that NCPO members have not yet discussed on the issue concerning political parties wishing NCPO to lift the ban. According to the army chief, if the request is to be approved, NCPO has to make sure that movements by political parties be restricted and not pose any adverse effect on national security. Touching on reports that the Thai military has asked for cooperation from the state-run TPBS television station to change an anchorman on a programme who had asked the interim government to listen to the people’s voices before embarking on the national reform, the army chief acknowledged that the military had monitored the programme and had discussed with the station’s executives. The army chief insisted that the military found discussions are needed because certain views are still differed between both sides. (TNA)
