Bangkok by-election lively

BANGKOK, June 16 (TNA) - Sunday’s lively by-election in Don Mueang is expected to boost voter turnout to 70 percent, with unofficial results expected by 7.00 p.m. Sunday night. Chairman of Thailand’s Election Commission Apichart Sukkhakanond and Commissioner Praphan Naiyakowit said so far there had been no voting irregularities. Police said over 500 policemen were assigned to man the polling places. Sunday’s by-election was organised after Karun Hosakul of the ruling Pheu Thai Party was disqualified by the Supreme Court for violating election law. This by-election had pit Tankhun Jitt-itsara of the major opposition Democrat Party against Yuranunt Pamornmontri of Pheu Thai Party. A total of 10 candidates were contesting in the by-election, which involved over 100,000 eligible voters and 171 polling stations. (TNA)
