Bangkok extends deadline for street vendors to trade on pavements

BANGKOK, July 15 (TNA) – Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) set a new deadline for street vendors near the Memorial Bridge and the Phra Pok Klao bridge to move their stalls from the pavements by September 11. It earlier allowed them to trade on pavements until July 18 only. Somchai Traiphittayakul, Phranakhon District Chief said after talks with representatives of street vendors that the BMA gave them another two months to trade on pavements. On September 12, the pavements must be cleared for pedestrians. Vendors said they needed leniency until the end of this year because they could not find new place to sell their goods. However, the BMA can give them only two months as vendors at nearby Pak Klong Talat flower market had also been forced to relocate their stalls from the pavements for the benefit of the public. About 350 vendors in this area will be affected from the BMA’s pavement clearing plan. The BMA set a new place for them to relocate to at Klong San area. After the areas near the two bridges are free from vendor stalls, the BMA will beautify the landscape to be the cultural road of Rattanakosin Island in Bangkok’s historic area in line with the government’s project to develop the Chao Phraya River sides for tourists.
