Bangkok hosts SEA Conference on Access to Justice

BANGKOK, August 13 (TNA) - Some 250 legal experts from Southeast Asian countries, plus diplomats and academics, are gathering in Bangkok for the Southeast Asia Regional Conference on Access to Justice, aimed mainly at promoting public access to justice. After Thursday morning's opening ceremony, presided over by Thai Justice Minister General Paiboon Khumchaya, the participants discussed ways to provide assistance on laws, a help given to criminal victims and witnesses protection. They also exchanged legal ideas, as each country in the region has its own laws which are, possibly, different from others. Besides, the participants exchanged views on a possibility to revoke the death sentence, the issue that several developed countries have pressured countries which still uphold the death sentence on serious crimes. General Paiboon then told journalists that Thailand does not object to a revocation of the death sentence. As many people still want the death sentence to exist, the justice minister noted, the Thai government is, therefore, studying from fellow member countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) which still enforce the death penalty, before making a decision.
