Bangkok prepares for possible flood

BANGKOK, July 20 (TNA) - Seventy percent water drainage and garbage collection operations in Bangkok have been completed, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), as the capital city is preparing for possible flooding during the current monsoon season. More than 600 BMA workers and people living in a housing estate in Bangkok’s Tawee Wattana district on Sunday joined hands to collect garbage and drain waterways of a canal to facilitate water flow to Klong Tawee Wattana, a key Bangkok drainage canal. Klong Tawee Wattana connects Bangkok with Nakhon Pathom and Samut Sakhon provinces and residents living near the canal suffered tremendously during the major flooding in late 2011. BMA Deputy Permanent Secretary Sanya Chinimit said Sunday’s operations were part of the BMA’s plan to prevent flooding in Bangkok and outlying areas. As monsoon season has just started, Sanya said the amount of rain volume is still uncertain because more storms could enter Thailand later this year. (TNA)
