Bangkok seeks cooperation from Copenhagen on environment conservation and management

BANGKOK, January 22 (TNA) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Council (BMC) seeks future cooperation with the Copenhagen City Hall on environment conservation and management. It was reported in Bangkok on Tuesday that BMC Vice President Man Charoenwal led a group of the city councilors to pay a courtesy call on Thai Ambassador to Denmark Vimol Kidchob in Copenhagen, Denmark's capital, earlier this week to discuss BMC plans on boosting bilateral cooperation with the Copenhagen Municipality as sister cities in the future. The BMC delegation raised issues on environment conservation and management, namely garbage disposal, as currently Bangkok deals with more than 10,000 tonnes of garbage daily, while the city's waste combustion facilities can abolish only 500 tonnes of garbage daily and spaces for landfills of garbage are limited by the expanding urbanization to suburbs. Copenhagen's effective environment conservation and management, as well as pollution reduction and social responsibility among locals through collective energy conservation have become internationally outstanding, prompting the BMC to seek its cooperation on the issues through the top Thai envoy in the Danish capital, as an initial step toward more bilateral municipal cooperation between the two cities. The BMC delegation also proposed bilateral cooperation with Copenhagen on the development of Thai youth's potential through sports exchange initiatives. The top Thai envoy to Denmark said she is willing to coordinate with the Copenhagen Municipality on the proposed cooperation with progress expected by mid-2014, when agreed actions should be started.(TNA)
