Bernama Journalist Bags A.Samad Ismail Young Journalist Award

PETALING JAYA (Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia), April 19 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) journalist Sakini Mohd Said bagged the A. Samad Ismail Young Journalist Award at Malaysian Press Institute (MPI)-Petronas Malaysian Journalism Award 2013 Friday night. This is the second award she bagged in a month after winning the Special Taskforce on facilitating Business (Pemudah) Journalism Competition 2013 last month. She said her win through the report titled 'Lahad Datu Intrusion A Lesson In Unity' was indeed an unexpected victory. "I did not expect this at all, but Alhamdulillah (All praise be to Allah), I'm truly grateful. This will indeed motivate me to write more quality reports," she said. Meanwhile, Bernama photojournalist, Mohd Nasaruddin Mohamad Adib, bagged the award for the Best Photo Journalism category through his photograph of participants of Jelajah Malaysia 2013 crossing the Gemas train station during the second leg of the race. The prestigious Kajai Award was won by Berita Harian journalist Wan Norhayati Wan Alias through her report exposing corruption among immigration officers at the KL International Airport. With the award, she received cash prize of RM30,000 (US$9,262.12), a 100gm gold coin and a Mini Ipad, which were presented by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. Also present were Communication and Multimedia Minister Shabery Cheek and MPI chief executive officer Chamil Wariya. Speaking to reporters, Wan Noraini said she wrote the report to help improve weaknesses in the country for the benefit of the people. "I write for national interest. We want to work with the government to fix the weaknesses in the existing system," she said. A total of 552 entries were received for the awards from 284 journalists in various media organisations. The MPI-Petronas Malaysian Journalism Award was introduced in 1980 as an effort to recognise the works of Malaysian journalists with the aim to improve the quality of journalism in the country. -- BERNAMA
