Bicycle lanes to be opened around Bangkok's Rattanakosin Island

BANGKOK, Dec 27 (TNA) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has accelerated on working for the official opening of the capital’s bicycle lanes around the Rattanakosin Island on December 28, 2014. Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha will preside over the opening of the bicycle lanes at 7am on Sunday (Dec 28). The bicycle lanes will cover 12 roads with the total distance of eight kilometres around the Rattanakosin Island, where the famous Emerald Buddha Temple is located and visited by both foreign tourists and locals. Somchai Traipittayakul, Director of Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon District, told reporters on Saturday (Dec 27), while inspecting and instructing workers to oversee the safety for cyclists on the bicycle lanes, that more cyclists are expected if signposts are clearer. Noting that a number of tourists wander in the area, where there are also several schools,Somchai stressed car drivers will also have to cooperate by strictly follow the traffic rules. Besides, metropolitan police will be asked to take action against violators of traffic rules. (TNA)
