Blaze continues in peat swamp forest in Thai Far South

NARATHIWAT, THAILAND, May 10 (TNA) - A fire has continued raging through a peat swamp forest in the Thai Far South, having damaged over 140 acres of forest land and affected over 30 nearby households, while officials have been putting more efforts to prevent the blaze from spreading into nearby rubber and oil palm plantations of local villagers. The officials continued working hard on Tuesday to contain and put out the fire that has raged the peat swamp forest in Ta Po Yoh and Luboh Bua Cha Sub-districts of Narathiwat Province's Yi-ngo District. The over 200 firefighters from the provincial disaster prevention and mitigation office, a local defence volunteer force and a Marine ad-hoc unit, who have been mobilised for the mission, have erected fire barriers to prevent the blaze from spreading into villagers' farmlands, but a strong wind has blown out the fire to new dry areas, making it difficult to bring the situation under control at the moment.
