BRICS countries to engage in joint scientific research - memorandum

MOSCOW, March 23. /TASS/. The BRICS grouping of leading emerging market economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Arica) intend to join efforts in scientific research, according to a draft Memorandum published in the Russian government’s legal information web portal on Monday. The draft Memorandum on Cooperation in Science, Technologies and Innovations stipulates the BRICS countries’ interaction in nanotechnologies and renewable energy sources, outer space and the Earth’s observations and sustainable agriculture development. Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev instructed the Education and Science Ministry on Monday to sign the Memorandum on the Russian government’s behalf. Among other cooperation areas, the document mentions "highly productive computer computations, water resources and contamination neutralization, food security, medicine and biotechnologies." The draft Memorandum says that the BRICS countries will exchange information in the field of science, technologies and innovations, hold short-term programs for the exchange of scientists and specialized training programs, develop and implement joint programs and projects. The draft Memorandum also stipulates "establishing mechanisms of joint financing for the support of BRICS research programs and large-scale projects of infrastructure researches." Science ministers of BRICS countries will coordinate interaction in scientific research. They are expected to meet at least once a year in a country that will hold the rotating chair in the BRICS group. The BRICS next summit is scheduled to be held in Ufa in July 2015. Read more
