BRICS nations to set up working group to develop information technology - presidential aide

DVORIKI VILLAGE /Vladimir region/, July 19. /TASS/. The BRICS emerging economies will set up a working group for cooperation in the field of information technology, Igor Shchegolev, an aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, said on Saturday. Speaking after a meeting with participants in the Russian Educational Youth Forum Terra Scientia on the Klyazma River in the Vladimir region, Shchegolev said: "It is important for us that cooperation in the field of information technology has been included in a declaration signed after a summit and an economic strategy." "It is assumed that we will now cooperate more intensely in this field and exchange experience, develop joint projects and, moreover, even create a special working group," Shchegolev told journalists, summarising the outcome of a two-day summit in the Russian city of Ufa. On Monday, Communications Minister Nikolai Nikiforov told TASS that Russia might pursue joint development of software products in cooperation with BRICS and Asian nations. "It seems to me that we will exactly follow the path of collective development. A collective breakthrough will take place if we make open products in cooperation according to common standards," Nikiforov said. "BRICS is the only platform of international cooperation that is able to turn over the situation on the IT-market," the minister added. The BRICS summit took place in Ufa from July 8 to July 9, bringing together the leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. BRICS countries collectively represent about 26 percent of the world’s geographic area and are home to 42 percent of the world’s population. In 2013, BRICS countries' share of global trade stood at 16.1 percent, 10.8 percent of military spending and 40.2 percent in production of non-renewable energy resources. The group's consumer market is the world's largest, growing by $500 billion a year. The first official summit of the group, founded in June 2006, took place in June 2009 in Russia’s Yekaterinburg. Since then, meetings at the highest level are held annually in member-countries. The last summit took place in Brazil. Russia took over the presidency of BRICS on April 1. Read more
