British High Commission Hosts Queen Elizabeth II Birthday Celebration

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 (Bernama) -- The British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday night hosted the official birthday celebration of Queen Elizabeth II. More than 700 guests comprising members of the diplomatic corps and representatives from the government and business community were hosted to a reception by British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Vicki Treadell, at the rooftop of Avenue K shopping mall, here. Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai (right in the picture) represented the Malaysian government at the event. In her speech, Treadell said the dynamic relations between the United Kingdom (UK) and Malaysia was growing strong. She noted that some 20 to 25 British companies in Malaysia had a total of over US$23 billion (RM86 billion) of investment and accounted for almost US$2.13 billion (RM8 billion) of Malaysian exports per annum. "And with Malaysia, on the United Nations Security Council, we are committed to working together on the key global agenda issues of the day like countering extremism and climate change," she said. Through partnerships between British and Malaysian academic institutions, Treadell said 58,000 Malaysian students were pursuing British degrees in Malaysia and some 16,000 Malaysian students were currently studying in the UK. At the function, guests also participated in the best selfie competition where one lucky guest won a pair of return flight tickets from Kuala Lumpur to London. Queen Elizabeth II was born on April 21, 1926 but the official birthday of Her Majesty is usually celebrated in June each year. (photoBERNAMA) --BERNAMA
