Casualties from traffic accidents keeps growing in this Songkran festival

BANGKOK, April 13 (TNA) -- Authorities reported 520 traffic accidents on April 12 which is the second day of road safety campaigns for this Songkran festival. In the accidents, 64 people were killed and 550 others injured. Sophon Mekthon, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Public Health, said drink driving was the most common cause, resulting in 36.35% of the accidents, followed by speed driving which caused 33.46% of the accidents. Motorcycles were involved in 81% of the accidents. By provinces, the highest number of accidents, 26, happened in Chiang Mai. The biggest amount of the injured, 25, was recorded each in Chiang Mai and Lampang provinces. The highest death toll, 6, was reported in Phichit province. Mr Sophon said on April 11 and 12 there were 907 traffic accidents which killed 116 people and injured 981 others. The highest number of accidents, 45, happened in Chiang Mai. The biggest death toll, 8, was reported in Buri Ram, and the highest number of the injured, 48, was recorded in Chiang Mai. Samut Prakan province remained free of traffic accidents. (END)
