CDC chair disagrees with direct election of Thai PMs

BANGKOK, December 26 (TNA) - A proposal recently aired by the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) that Thailand's future prime ministers, under the new Charter, could be directly elected, or could be a non-partisan or could not be a member of the Parliament or the House of Representatives (MP), has been objected by the CDC Chair, Dr. Bavornsak Uwanno. Dr. Bavornsak told journalists on Friday that he disagrees with the proposal, as it would give excessive power to the government and it would be difficult for a verification or an impeachment. Dr. Bavornsak cautioned that the proposal could also create a domestic political strife, like in the past. In response to the proposed idea, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan opined, meanwhile, that the proposal is still in the “early stage” and it is not the right time now to express any idea or opinion, pointing out that it is up to the CDC to finally decide. General Prawit also said he agrees with Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha in using power to shut down media which frequently present reports in creating, probably, a social divisiveness, as all concerned parties, including the government and the army-led National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), want to see national reconciliation. General Prawit acknowledged that several journalists have posed unconstructive questions which could affect national reconciliation. The deputy prime minister, who oversees national security, also noted that concerned security agencies are well-prepared to provide security to New Year travelers, while the NCPO is also closely monitoring the situation. When publicly reporting his interim government's three-month performances at Bangkok's Government House on Thursday, the prime minister urged the media to report news or information constructively, insisting that he will continue constructively exercising the martial law but he may have to stricter enforce the martial law against unconstructive media and those using war weapons during the upcoming New Year Festival.
