CDC:Thailand's new Constitution will not prolong power

CHIANG MAI, April 4 (TNA) - In an attempt to ease worry by the public, Borwornsak Uwanno, Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC), has reiterated that Thailand's new Charter, being drafted, will help the government's work become more efficient and achieve success, rather than prolonging power for the ruling military junta. Borwornsak made the remarks on Saturday (Apr 4), when CDC members were gathering opinions on Thailand's new draft Constitution in Chiang Mai Province in the Thai North for the second day. Borwornsak explained that the new Thai Charter focuses on the scrapped 1997 and 2007 Constitution and contains new subjects in which two sets of committee, including a reform movement and a national strategic movement, will be set up to assist the government to work more efficiently and achieve success. Meanwhile, CDC is gathering opinions in the Thai North on what additional issues they want to include in the new Charter, namely reform and creation of reconciliation among the public, power distribution, political institution and general elections. Participants have expressed their concerns on national politics, people’s rights and vote buying, proposing that the work of the Election Commission of Thailand (EC) be improved to prevent candidates from buying votes before elections.
