Chiang Mai mulls to construct second airport

CHIANG MAI, THAILAND, January 17 (TNA) - Thailand's northern resort Chiang Mai Province plans to construct its second airport to serve the rising number of international visitors. Chiang Mai Governor Suriya Prasatbandit told journalists of the plan on Saturday (Jan 17), saying that a feasibility study on the province's second airport, set to be located between Sankampaeng and Mae On areas, is being conducted. The governor noted that the plan is in response to Chiang Mai's growing aviation services and becoming Thailand's northern aviation centre, with the existing Chiang Mai Airport now serving more than 200 international flights daily, operated by eight airlines. The governor pointed out the international flights at Chiang Mai's existing airport serve global visitors on both domestic and 18 overseas routes, prompting the airport to currently expand its passenger terminals and construct more parking bays for aircraft. According to the governor, Chiang Mai, a globally-renowned resort city, welcomed seven million international visitors last year, earning the province over 58.55 billion tourism-related revenues. The Chiang Mai governor acknowledged his province has targeted to attract additional one million international visitors this year and planned to upgrade provincial infrastructure to serve the growing visitors.
