Chief justices of Russian, Cuban supreme courts discuss cooperation in Havana

HAVANA, January 25. /TASS/. The chief justices and officers of justice of Russia and Cuba held consultations to develop cooperation and share experience on Thursday in the People’s Supreme Court of Cuba. Russian Ambassador to Cuba Andrei Guskov also attended the meeting. One of the main issues that were discussed was joint training of officers of justice and their professional development in Russia. "Cooperation between Cuba and Russia in the legal sphere is very fruitful and has great importance for improving and developing our judicial systems. One of the evidences is the training of Cuban judges in the Russian State University of Justice, and the programs have results," said Chief Justice of the Russian Supreme Court Vyacheslav Lebedev. The Cuban colleagues noted that to date they are renewing and adjusting legal norms, and Russian experience may be useful for them. "We have strong fraternal ties dating back to the Soviet era: the Cuban Constitution of 1976 was developed with regard to the legal practices of socialist countries; we learnt much from the Soviet constitution. We know about the progress in the Russian judicial system and in some way it is an example for our reforms," said Chief Justice of the People’s Supreme Court of Cuba Ruben Ferro. The Cuban chief justice said that sharing experience is very important to experts, and it is important that these channels of cooperation were established long ago and are safely operating. "It is not the first year we are gathering in this format. This year a visit of the Cuban delegation to Russia is also planned; it is necessary to further develop this partnership," the chief justice added. The meeting between the Russian and Cuban chief justices is not the only example of contacts in the legal sphere. In December last year representatives for the Russian and Cuban prosecutor general’s offices coordinated a plan of events of interagency cooperation for 2019-2020. There are plans to regularly hold seminars and round-table discussions which will involve experts in different areas of activity of the countries’ prosecutor’s offices. It is also planned to develop cooperation between regional prosecutors. Read more
