China: 90 Per Cent Of Drugs Smuggled From Golden Triangle

By Niam Seet Wei BEIJING, June 24 (Bernama) -- The notorious 'Golden Triangle' in southeast Asia remains the largest source of drugs for China's traffickers, as more than 90 per cent of the seized drugs were found smuggled from that region, reports Xinhua news agency. Some 9.3 tonnes of heroin and 11.4 tonnes of methamphetamine were seized by Chinese law enforcers last year, with more than 90 per cent of the narcotics coming from the 'Golden Triangle' which comprises the border regions involving Thailand, Myanmar and Laos, Xinhua cited a national report on the drug situation Wednesday. “Potential heroin production in Afghanistan was estimated at 670 tonnes, the largest producing area in the world,” the report said, adding heroin imported from the region accounting for 1.4 per cent of total seizures in China last year in over 10 provinces. Cocaine from South America also entered China from time to time, detected in 12 provincial regions, it said. -- BERNAMA
