China to Build Large Base to Aid Activities around Senkakus

Shanghai, June 13 (Jiji Press)--The China Coast Guard plans to construct a large-scale base in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, in a sign of its readiness to step up activities in Japanese territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands, it was learned Saturday. The construction plan was revealed on the eastern China province's website in early June, when it reported on a meeting of officials from the coast guard and the city's related division. According to the website, the base will be constructed on a 50-hectare site and will have a 1,200-meter-long pier that can accommodate up to six 10,000-ton-class ships. It will also have a large training facility and hangars for airplanes and helicopters. The total construction cost will be 3.34 billion yuan, or about 66 billion yen. The specific construction site has yet to be decided. The website did not say when the base will be completed. The base construction in Wenzhou will help the activities of ships aimed at protecting China's maritime interests related to Diaoyu, the website said, using the Chinese name for the Japanese-administered islands in the East China Sea. Wenzhou, located in southern Zhejiang Province, allows easy access to the Senkaku Islands. Information on the base construction has already been deleted from the province's website. END
