China Tea Association: Lipton Tea Is Safe

BY NG CHE YEAN BEIJING, April 27 (Bernama)-- The China Tea Association Thursday questioned a report released by environmental protection organisation Greenpeace which said unsafe levels of pesticide residue were found in some of Lipton's products. "Our association has studied two reports released by Greenpeace on April 11 and April 24 respectively but the content levels of pesticide residue found in random samples of Lipton tea were in line with the country's national standards on pesticide residue, and are safe to drink," the association said in an statement. Unilever, Lipton's parent company also said in a statement posted on its official Chinese microblog that all its Lipton tea products were safe. "As a responsible multinational company, Unilever China has always upheld high quality standards and the protection of consumers' rights. All the Lipton tea products we make are completely in line with national standards on pesticide residue, and are safe and up-to-standard goods," the company said. According to a report by Greenpeace, methomyl, a pesticide banned in China, and 17 other pesticide residue had been detected in some Lipton teas that were randomly purchased by the organisation. Lipton was not the only tea brand investigated by Greenpeace.
