China Urges Qatar to Play Major Role in Climate Change Negotiations

Beijing, September 18 (QNA) - China's Vice Premier Li Keqiang urged the State of Qatar to play a positive role that assists the climate change negotiations. During his meeting here Tuesday with HE Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, the Chairman of Qatar's Administrative Control and Transparency Authority (ACTA) who is also Chairman of Climate Change Conference (COP18), Li said that being the host of the Climate Change Conference after few months, Qatar is expected to play a positive role in getting tangible outcomes from the negotiations on Bali Road Plan. The Chinese Vice Premier also called on the developed countries to, significantly, reduce carbon emissions and to fulfill their pledges on providing more funding and assistance with regard to technology transfer. He reiterated that the international community must work together to tackle climate change through the restructuring of their economies, strengthening the environment protection and developing low-carbon economies. He called on world states to adhere to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, especially the principle of Common but Differentiated Responsibility (CBDR). He also urged energy producers and consumers to work closely together in order to ensure the stability of the energy market. He also suggested Chinese-Qatari long-term cooperation in the field of energy. For his part, HE Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah said he was determined to strengthen contacts with China in regard to climate change, to help all parties for making joint efforts to address this issue, and to push forward Qatari-Chinese cooperation in the field of energy. HE Al-Attiyah will chairs the Eighth Conference of the Signing Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in Doha at the end of November. (QNA)
