Chinese contractor begins Tehran-North Freeway project

Tehran, March 5, IRNA -- The construction of the first section of Tehran-North Freeway was undertaken by a Chinese contractor 10 days ago. Also, the fourth section of the freeway is to come on stream as of March 11, Mehr News Agency reported. The freeway will link Tehran to the cities along the Caspian Sea coast via Chalus, Mazandaran province. The new agreement was signed by the government and the Chinese contractor of the project. The Chinese contractor began implementing the project years ago. However, the operations were suspended due to a number of problems related to financing the project. The first section of the highway, which links Tehran to Shahrestanak, extends for 32 kilometers. The route passes through Kan, Sooleqan, Emamzadeh Aqil, Taloun tunnel and Laniz valley. According to the Ministry of Roads and Urban Construction, this section will reduce the current distance from Tehran to the northern cities by 60 kilometers. The total length of the second section of the freeway is 25 km. It has 20 tunnels extending a total of 24.2 km. The section's longest tunnel is 'Alborz' whose length is 6,378 m. The freeway's third section, which extends for 46 km, stretches from Pol-e Zanguleh to Marzanabad in Mazandaran province. The section will have 92 tunnels with an overall length of 33.5 km. Progress in these two sections was stalled due to high costs and the contractor's inability to implement it within the timeframe agreed upon.
