Chinese pandas' 12-year-stay in Thailand

CHIANG MAI, THAILAND, October 12 (TNA) - Marking 12 years' stay in Thailand by Xuang Xuang and Lin Hui, a panda couple lent by Beijing as China's animal ambassadors to the Thai Kingdom, Chiang Mai Zoo, where the panda couple stay, has welcomed more crowds of international visitors and announced that Lin Hui is pregnant for 113 days. More international visitors, including youths, visited Chiang Mai Zoo on October 12, the day marking the 12-year-stay at the zoo by the panda couple, particularly the area where the panday couple stay for public visits. The pandas' caretakers and research teams have, meanwhile, kept a close watch on Lin Hui's developments, as the mother panda has been pregnant for 113 days and she has clearly shown signs lately of preparing for giving birth to a new panda cub through her behaviours and physical changes. Chiang Mai Zoo Director Niphon Wichairat told reporters that Xuang Xuang and Lin Hui arrived at the zoo on October 12, 2003 and the female panda earlier gave birth to a female panda cub, Lin Ping, which is now in China, and she is now pregnant for another panda cub. The Chiang Mai Zoo has attracted over 300,000 interntional visitors annually since the panda couple arrived at the zoo over the past 12 years, especially after Lin Hui gave birth to her first panda cub, having generated more than one billion baht revenues to the zoo and boosted local tourism of the northern Thai resort province. During the ongoing school holidays, other animal sections of Chiang Mai Zoo have also welcomed and drawn more young visitors. (TNA)
