Coates Rules Out Tokyo Olympics Cancellation, Delay

Tokyo, Feb. 14 (Jiji Press)--The World Health Organization sees no need to cancel or postpone the Tokyo Olympics in summer due to the coronavirus outbreak, John Coates, the International Olympic Committee's coordination commission chief for the 2020 Games, said Friday. The IOC is in close cooperation with the WHO, Coates said at a press conference in Tokyo. He also said athletes and spectators from abroad will have to obey rules set by Japanese authorities when they enter Japan. Yoshiro Mori, president of the Tokyo Games organizing committee, said it is not considering the possibility of holding competitions behind closed doors in the event of the virus spreading further. "We'll take the measures needed to hold the events as planned," Mori said. END
