Conference on 20th anniversary of Khojaly tragedy held in Hungary

Baku, February 22 (AzerTAc). The Azerbaijan Embassy in Hungary and the Foundation for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities in Budapest co-organized an international conference entitled “The role of international justice in the Western Balkan and South Caucasus” dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Khojaly genocide. According to the Azerbaijan Ombudsman` Office, the conference featured discussions on Khojaly and Srebrenica massacres, international justice system`s activity and the role of the international courts in bringing criminal charges against genocide committers and. Azerbaijan ambassador to Hungary Vilayat Guliyev and director of the Foundation for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities Gyorgy Tatar and Azerbaijan`s commissioner for human rights Elmira Suleymanova, witness of the Khojaly tragedy, writer-publicist Sariyya Muslumgizi delivered speeches and shared their views to the effect at the event. Elmira Suleymanova underlined that culprits of the Khojaly genocide which is one of the bloodiest tragedies of the XX century must receive deserved punishment. The event demonstrating a short film attended by representatives of different international organizations, experts on international humanitarian law and criminal law, eyewitnesses of Khojaly and Srebrenica massacres, employees of the embassies in Budapest, Hungarian ombudsperson and scientists. Conference participants were handed over Azerbaijan ombudsman`s statements on Khojaly tragedy, legal publications, books on the massacre published by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. As part of the visit, Elmira Suleymanova met with Ramil Safarov, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Hungarian court. Ramil Safarov expressed his satisfaction with incarceration conditions noting he is translating the third book from Hungarian into Azerbaijani language. Different books as well as book “The Boys of Paul Street” translated by Ramil Safarov were presented to her.
