Corruption in Thailand lowest in 6 years

BANGKOK, February 3 (TNA) - Bangkok-based University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) says it has found from its survey in December 2015 that corruption in Thailand was the lowest in six years and the efficiency of the independent National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) improved. UTCC President Sauwanee Thairungroj told journalists on February 2 that results from the survey showed Thailand's Corruption Situation Index (CSI) stood at 55, equal to that in June 2015. Sauwanee noted that the findings in December and June 2015 also showed the percentage of kickbacks for contractors of state projects paid to corrupt authorities dropped to 1-15 per cent worth of the value of projects. Sauwanee explained that each percentage meant corruption money fell by 10 billion baht; so, the overall findings from the latest survey showed corruption in Thailand was the lowest in six years. Thanavath Phonvichai, UTCC Deputy President for Academic Affairs and Research, told reporters, meanwhile, that the corruption situation in Thailand dropped in both quantity and the amounts of kickbacks, with the percentage of kickbacks being peak at 25 per cent of the value of projects or 250 billion baht yearly, an about 10 per cent fall or 100-150 billion baht. Thanavath acknowledged the survey also found that the index of NACC's efficiency rose from 26 in 2013 to 55 in 2015, while people demanded for strict law enforcement and participation in graft investigations.
